Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines have been in development since the 1960s, with the first mRNA flu vaccine being tested in mice in the 1990s and the first mRNA vaccines for rabies being tested in humans in 2013.
2 December 2020, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the first mRNA COVID-19 vaccine for use in the UK.
