EXCERPT

The reason for this is quite simple and has been known for years: namely that the Jeryl Lynn strain carries an HN protein of genotype A, whereas circulating mumps viruses carry a genetic component that is different, namely an HN protein belonging to genotype G. Inasmuch as the HN protein induces neutralizing antibodies, it is not surprising that a difference between that protein in the vaccine and in circulating mumps virus changes the vaccine’s ability to protect.
